SHADOWS IN PARADISE (1986)
by Aki Kaurismäki

This is the only clip I could find of this film, but it is a really great "romantic comedy". I would say the humor is pretty dark and it's def. not anywhere near the definition of what a "romantic comedy" is in the USA, but it is funny and all the characters are pretty awesome. Plus the cinematography makes Finland look soooo cold. This is the love story of a garbage man & a grocery clerk.

oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY BENNY P. / KENDRA HEMLOCK!

THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (1940)
by Ludwig Berger, Michael Powell and Tim Whelan

now here's a movie!
THE BARON OF ARIZONA (1950)
by Samuel Fuller
starring Vincent Price

"Master swindler James Reavis devotes years to forging documents that will give him claim to the entire state of Arizona. He finds a young girl whom he believes is an orphan and hires a governess to educate her in the manner of the Spanish aristocracy. He invents deceased parents for her whose ancestry can be traced to a mythical Spanish nobleman. He then insinuates himself into a Spanish monastery for three years so he can access its biblioteca which carries the records of Spanish land grants. He later joins a gypsy band to have access to the library of a Spanish noblemen where he can alter duplicate documents. When everything is in place, he marries the now-grown young woman and puts in his claim as her husband as the Baron of Arizona." - imdb.com

I thought this was a pretty good movie, and V. Price is outstanding! It's a true story that makes it a lot better and the ending was pretty surprising.

THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE
(1973)
by Peter Yates
starring Robert Mitchum & Peter Boyle

I didn't love this movie, but it's really well shot and the way the characters played each other kinda reminded of THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE UGLY... maybe that's a bit far fetched though. I've always been a fan of Robert Mitchum though and I think his acting in this film as the old guy who still gets stuff done is pretty great.
oh, also! I finally got this LP:

SUMMER 2009 CATS

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

I don't really like looking at people's feet and I wouldn't want to have anyone look at my feet... but this sprain I got in my ankle last night is freakish! I was playing a game of 21 w/ Reed, Hermon, Adam, Vince, and Max and I just inverted my ankle and POP! Moments ago I got back from getting X-RAYS and they still couldn't tell if I tore a ligament or fractured it. I am hoping I don't miss too many outdoor adventures. Why does this always happen to me in the summer? Last August I stone-bruised my left heel, and this morning I was so frustrated I broke my cane. bummer

Damn! Getting my hours cut has never felt so good! Every Wednesday is a beautiful new adventure. Margaritte, Rachel, Ness, & I visited Staircase yesterday and had a picnic on that broken bridge pictured above. We ate rice noodles, carrots, cabbage, and homemade peanut sauce all wrapped up in a giant collard green! And of course, the day was topped off w/ bacon wrapped around dates & mangos on the grilllllllllll
I hope everyone in PDX, OR can make it to Tiga to hear D.J. DOG DAZE & drink some Black Boss porter! those pork medallions aren't so bad either.

I just wanted to mention that Benny P. (the number 1 blog dog) advised me to check out this Cerveza Crema by Anderson Valley in Mendicino County, California and it must be the most delicious beer I have ever had on a hot day! It's about 11 or 12 bucks a six pack and totally worth it. They also, so I have heard, get the energy to run their brewery from the sun & batteries!

Melba Jean, picking out records to spin for our guests last night... she really seemed to like Speaking in Tongues by TALKING HEADS.

I really wish Ben Parrish were here last night to try these mangos & dates wrapped in bacon + these grilled eggplants w/ mediterranean style topping w/ tomatoes, feta, etc. so delicious! NEVER FORGET!

Yesterday, Ness & I took a bike ride out to Grass Lake and we found these really spacey orange flowers. This picture is out of focus, but I really need to find out what these are called and plant them everywhere! If you know, leave a comment. Kendra, I'm looking at you (w/ my cyber-glasses).

In the garden, we currently have some delicious sweet peas & collard greens that are ready to eat. The salad greens had to be pulled up because they were all starting to flower, we just couldn't eat enough salad! Coming up we'll have some beets, carrots, kale, squash, cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin, tomatoes, basil, sweet peppers, and jalapeno peppers!

On Friday night we watched REVOLUTIONARY ROAD w/ Leo and Kate Winslet... I wanted to see it cause I read the book in my 50's class... and the movie was boring and poorly acted. Then last night we watched this Ridley Scott film called BLACK RAIN w/ Michael Douglas. I thought it would be awesome cause you know, BLADE RUNNER & ALIEN are amazing... but that movie sucked too.

This morning I woke up to the loudest thunder ever! I totally didn't realize what it was at first, and then I realized that it was the first time I had ever heard thunder in the North West. For an instant, I thought I was in Texas when I woke up... whew!

open faced tofu sandwiches that blew my mind!

Melba Jean, fighting crime

I have never been so lucky! First I won a full pound of coffee from B & B at the Capitol Theater's raffle & then I win this $25 gift cert. from the Washington Commuter website!

I finally got the OMAR SOULEYMAN Highway to Hassake 2xLP that Sublime Frequencies put out a couple days ago... and it rules! Make sure to look for the guy who whispers poetry & verse into Omar's ear before he sings it!

You have just gotta hear this demo of DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH from 1978! AMAZING!

(it's a good idea to click on the images to see them larger)

these are all photos from Mt. Saint Helens State Park, taken last weekend.

I've been listening to Off The Wall soooo much lately!

this song/video rules:

DeGrassi High is still really good and very consistent w/ DeGrassi Jr. High... but of course, a little bit heavier on the emotions. But this was a really fun episode! Everybody Wants Something!

I finally saw NOTORIOUS by A. Hitchcock, and of course, it was amazing.
